On her blog called TOMBOY style Lizzie Garett researches on Jane Birkin, Kelis and Marlon Brando, on hunting clothes and military bags. Nevertheless there’s no chronologic order, in the end this trip visiting iconic women and me and popculture is tracing a history of coolness.
Lizzie’s work demonstrates just another time but in a nicely light-footed way that real style isn’t superficial as it comes from the inside – from a certain feeling and knowledge for the self and the zeitgeist and for mindsets, ideas, styles and their origins.
Personal style and basically identification is an operation in a universe of ideas and texts, in many aspects comparable with the internet. Everything has been there before, for fashion this is more true than for every other art. You just have to use things for yourself, quote, alter, put things together and play with their histories.
That might also be one of the reasons why especially style or fashion blogs – as a never ending line of reblogs – work out so well. Let’s call reblogs rather quotations. It’s a pity that many of the bloggers don’t seem to work consciously with that aspect. There are countless tumblrs which don’t even link to their sources. Quoting is no shame and there is no competition for the fastet or most exclusive blog. What really matters is reflection, context and some personality.
