On the occasion of the MELT festival Katja called on to give insight into the musical background of the fashion bloggers. So here’s my very confused musical career.
1995… Spice Girls: Their songs about mama, girl power etc. were more than suitable for this age. Favourite Spice Girl was Posh. - Gosh! The first men in my collection were rather gay: The Gipsy Kings, Elton John (must have been 1992 or something) and in the late nineties Robbie W.
Elton John - Can you feel the love tonight
Spice Girls- Say you’ll be there
1998… My first electronic (DISCO) Phase started with a maxi single of the Loveparade anthem of 1998. CDs by Daft Punk, Modjo, Spiller, other french house legends and Jamiroquai followed. The big sister of my best friend gave us thank god some Zoot Woman, Björk and Jimmy Eat World records. In this time my best friend Tom will buy a Daft Punk album because he thought this would be - how the cover says - punk. But we will meet later…
Westbam - Loveparade 1998
Modjo - Lady (2000)
Zoot Woman - Automatic (2001)
2001… In the ninetees i wasn’t so focussed on house, i also bought CDs by the Foo Fighters and Nirvana. With a huge interest for skater boys this interest for grunge became a short love for Bands like New found glory, Antiflag, No use for a name, Ignite, Beatsteaks and so on. By the way in this time i met Tom who was the first “punk” in our village. After circa one year i was bored by stupid melodies so i left the skaters alone with Propaghandi dyed my hair black started listening EMO. Oldschool-Emo is high quality music if you’re 16 and live in a small village with only one good looking guy. Some of my favourite Bands were - of course - The Juliana Theory, Elliott, Braid, Get up Kids, Fugazi, Indian Summer, Bright Eyes and the rest.
Foo Fighters - Learn to fly
The Juliana Theory - The Closest Thing
Elliott - Calm Americans
Get Up Kids - Holiday
2003… This taste for ululations transformed in a love for -shame on me- screamo and hardcore. Tom started to become a neo-punk and listened to DAF and Fehlfarben. Someway we thought Pantha du Prince was new german electro as Quarks or Barbara Morgenstern and “Susan” was our favourite tune in the car. The most time of my youth i spent in the Villa, where all the Emo, Punk and HC-Kids hung out. In this aggressive post-pubertal phase i really liked The beautiful mistake, Envy, Yage, La Quiete, The Locust, Orchid, Blood Brothers, Atari Teenage Riot, Darkest Hour and all the others. (Of course my bf played guitar in a HC band.) But on LP i only had the pearls like The Mars Volta, At the drive-in and Amanda Rogers (all my HC-friends listened to her to fall to sleep). Strange enough in this phase i also had some older friends who listened to Deep House and for bruise free dancing i went with them to Robert Johnson and presumably looked like an idiot.
The beautiful Mistake - Circular Parade
Raein - Tigersuit
Amanda Rogers - This beauty
2005… My hair is brown again, maybe as a sign for being grown up someway. The love for The Mars Volta hadn’t faded, in contrary to the feelings for the hardcore guy and i finally had stopped being a kind of music nazi by listening to every kind of music except reggae, dancehall and ska.
Xiu Xiu - I love the valley OH
Thom Yorke - Black Swan
Patrick Wolf - A boy like me
The Knife - Like a pen
The Whitest Boy Alive - Burning
2009 I still love Xiu Xiu, Pantha du Prince and The Mars Volta and got over New Rave (this shows you’re never too old for music trends). My favourites are New Wave, Shoegaze, Krautrocky stuff and Electronica, Techno and Deep House.
The Mars Volta - Take the veil cerpin taxt
Prosumer and Murat Templi - Serenity
Brian Eno - By this river
FIN. + To be continued.
